2016
Irish Championship
Winner : Brendan Swan

Portarlington Golf Club by the banks of the river Barrow was host to the 2016 Irish Championship. In attendance were SOAG President Frank Foley, club Captain John Gordon, Lady Captain Mary Keogh, Lady President Mary Foy along with 13 one armed and 6 visitors.

With fair autumn weather forecast for the weekend Friday kicked off with a three person team event combining club members with SOAG members. With a par of 71 this parkland layout is a good test of accurate shot selection. A good afternoon was had by all and Michael O’ Grady’s team returning 67.5 to win the team competition.

Saturday morning dawned and the anticipation was palpable as a number of the entrants were in good spirits and feeling that this was their year. However, that man who always seems to have a smile on his face was playing very good golf! One assumes, a pep talk from two lady friends who came to support him had made the difference. Yes Ken was playing steady golf!

With one retirement mid round, it was left to the remaining eleven to come up with the goods, some perhaps suffering Fightmaster Cup hangovers struggled on the day while others could just not muster a challenge over the closing stretch which see’s 3 of the last 4 holes played along the banks of the Barrow. Indeed our winner taking a pair of sevens on two of the last three holes must have felt he had let it slip but fortunately had scored well up to that point to prevail.

At the presentation dinner Lady Captain Mary expressed the clubs gratitude at being chosen to host the event and hoped to see us in the future. SOAG President Frank thanked the club and members for the welcome shown to all who attended and wished the club well into the future. We had one new member Steve Fleming who unfortunately had to return home on Saturday morning due to the untimely passing of a close friend. Of course no championship is complete without our overseas visitors with President Frank and Jim Darragh in attendance. It was a great weekend with good craic and while Secretary Mary was speechless due to laryngitis she did thank all and congratulated the Fightmaster Cup team members on their recent victory in the USA.
